These 1976-1984 French Calliope label recordings of the chamber works for violoncello and piano of Camille Saint-Sans, accomplished by cellist Andre Navarra (1911-88) and pianist Annie D'Arco and presented here on one CD, are a must have for aficionados of the outstanding 20th c. French cello school, in which Navarra occupies a chair with fellow, eminent French cellists including Pierre Fournier and Paul Tortelier. Mr. Navarra was a famed soloist, chamber player and quartet member early in his career, works commissioner and a renowned teacher at the Conservatoire de Paris.
