With the success of Series 1 behind them the Next Generation series was now free to begin fully creating the show that would become such a huge hit with fans all round the world. With the now familiar characters in place the writers began to expand on them and create far deeper personalities that would help the development of the crew. With more freedom the writers created some very interesting and memorable episodes, highlights include 'The Measure Of A Man' which sees Picard defend Data when an investigation has to decide if he is a machine that belongs to the Federation, or a sentient being who belongs to no-one. 'Elementary, Dear Data' is a playful episode that sees Data playing the role of Sherlock Holmes in the holodeck and having to face a computer created Moriarty, who through a misunderstanding in programming becomes self aware and sets out to take over the ship. Arguably the highlight of the series has to be 'Q Who?' which sees the every mischievous Q causing havoc on the Enterprise once again. To show the crew how weak they are and to punish Picard for not letting him join them, Q hurls the Enterprise to the other side of the galaxy where for the first time they meet the deadly and unstoppable Borg.
