Rod Balch's NewTex CD is a whirlpool of sound that reflects most of the musical styles he has enjoyed during the past fifty years. It's partly folk; it's got some rock; and a big wallop of Fort Worth Blues, some pop, some country. It sounds like him. And it also features Buddy Whittington, Lewis Stephens, Milo Deering, Floyd Domino, Kenny Kosek and other great musicians from Texas and New York. Rod is a professional Harley mechanic (and rider) during the day, and he is a professional entertainer at night. He's good at both jobs. He's happy when he's beating on his Martin and blowing his harp while doing a solo acoustic show, but he's also happy rocking out with his ten-year-old electric ensemble that is well-known and respected by a certain slice of the Fort Worth club scene. This fresh recording is Rod's way of reaching out, of trying to make a dent in the culture that (probably) exists beyond the city limits of Fort Worth, Texas. He wants an excuse to put his Martin in the truck and go play a thousand clubs, no matter if they are sitting in Paris, Texas, or Paris, France. He wants to come say hello and play you some tunes. None of us are getting any younger, and this could be the beginning of the last rodeo. Let's get this done. Time's a'wasting. Some of these songs are Rod's; some are Steve Satterwhite's. One is our take on an old Mississippi Sheiks song. One was written by our friend Billy Marlowe who no longer physically lives in our neighborhood. All the songs include valuable contributions from our friends, and they include bits of what we've seen while we have enjoyed these lives that we have led.
