グループの中心人物であるレイ･パーカー･Jr.はミシガン州デトロイト出身。1970年代にバリー･ホワイトのバンド、Love Unlimited Orchestraのギタリストを務め、頭角をあらわし、スティーヴぃー･ワンダーのバックバンド、ワンダーラヴやチャカ･カーンのセッションに参加し、キャリアを磨いた。77年に自身のグループRaydioを結成。後にレイ・パーカー・Jr.＆ The Raydioと名前を変えて81年の名曲「Woman Needs Love」で全米1位の記録を残す。ソロ名義での映画『Ghost Busters』に主題歌の世界的なヒットでも知られている。
