Product Description

MOVING THROUGH TIME is a brilliant new collection of 12 extraordinary songs that touch the soul and delight the senses. Led by piano-vocalist sensation Randy Herman, the album features a world-class band, including legendary bassist (and producer) Zev Katz, Mark Copely on guitar, and Joe Bonadio on drums, with Clifford Carter on Hammond B3, and Aaron Heick (currently of The Letterman Show) on sax. Engineered by Grammy winner Matt Shane (Flight of the Concords), the songs, the sessions, the vibe and the performances - all magic. Musically rooted yet visionary - a funky piano approach to folkrock and classic pop with a cool new sound - the album is an utterly unique, total game-changer in the ?eld of Jewish music. Herman single-handedly makes it once again very cool to be a member of the tribe - but this album ain't just for Jews! The lyrics capture soaring universal themes without being heavy-handed, and the tunes are fun and catchy as hell. Like the ever-unfolding narrative of the People, the songs on this stunning debut album will connect your soul to the ancients, and point your spirit towards the future. Check it out - and prepare for a game-changing musical journey. ABOUT RANDY: Randy Herman rides a musical wave of funky piano music, folk/rock, and old-school pop, writing and performing songs for piano and vocals since the age of eleven. His vibe is warm and wise, intimate and intense, sweetly soulful and then refreshingly irreverent. He is your best friend, your confidante and your outrageous alter ego. Having gotten involved in experimental underground theater after college, Randy is a co-founder of the critically acclaimed Theater Oobleck, still a revered Chicago venue. After a few years of waiting tables while doing totally wacked-out and insanely brilliant underground theater, Randy began earning a living as a piano man. He played nightclubs, piano bars (including a 3-month engagement in Paris); did cover bands, studio gigs, live radio spots, a little touring... eventually focusing on performing original material. Randy recorded a full length album and an EP with his band The Sceptre of Benevolence; got some decent college radio play, a write-up in CMJ, reviews in The Chicago Tribune and The Reader and local commercial radio rotation on the legendary WXRT. He was a Discmakers' World Series of Bands finalist and Artist-of-the-Year on a local radio show. During this entire time, Randy was - for lack of a better term - a spiritual seeker. He wandered the landscape - chanting in ashrams, sitting in silent Buddhist meditation, attending sweat lodge ceremonies and rainbow gatherings. He lived Thoreau's dream in a wood-burning house in the woods of upstate New York just prior to moving to the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn where he promptly got mugged. There, Randy turned his focus to his Jewish heritage. His journey reached a turning point when he enrolled in the Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in Manhattan (cantor - noun; religious official in a synagogue who conducts the liturgical portion of the service, sings and chants the prayers, and leads the congregation in prayer and song). For five years, Randy was immersed in the study of the ancient musical-religious tradition of the Jewish people, including an intensive year in Jerusalem where the rhythms of the Middle East resounded deeply within him. Currently, Randy serves as full-time cantor in a wonderful synagogue community in Mt. Kisco, NY, balancing his clerical duties with his independent musical career. Both on and off the pulpit he is the original Rock 'n Roll Man of God. In demand as a concert performer in the Jewish world - both as a solo-performer and with his band - Randy is respected for his uniquely expressive, deeply groovy Jewish-themed songs as well as for his extraordinarily charismatic performances. Among the 12 new songs on his new CD, Moving Through Time, are dazzling and original works that are uniquely Jewish yet always universal. As he says, My goal has always been to achieve deep, authentic communicati
