ECMを代表するギタリストJohn Abercrombie...

ECMを代表するギタリストJohn AbercrombieとRalph Townerの共演作「Sargasso Sea」は、 1976年の録音。その５年後に録音されたのが、本作「Five Years Later」です。1980年代はFusionの台頭が著しく、この名手たちもその波に押されたのか、と思わせるようなところがあります。特に前半は、電気的に増幅された音が覆いかぶさり、いつもの２人ではないような印象が・・・。しかし、徐々に本来の姿を取り戻していくような構成で、ともにAcoustic Guitarで語り合う名演「The Juggler’s Etude」やAbercrombieのElectric GuitarとTownerのAcoustic Guitarがせめぎ合うかのような「Bumabia」は、やはりこの２人にしか表現できない豊かな音楽世界を形成しています。それにしても、お２人のポートレイトが若い!!。
