It is doubtful that composer Henry Purcell would have ever known that the success of his compact opera 'Dido and Aeneas' would last well over 300 years. Yet it is rather simple to see why this story of love, abandonment and death might fit right in today.
An exquisite work from start to finish, there is nary a college music student who isn't familiar with Dido's final lament, "When I am laid in earth." It is certainly the "hit" tune of the opera, sung by Dido on her deathbed. Of particular fascination to musicians, the aria employs a "ground bass," a pattern of notes in the bass that is repeated over and over again as an accompaniment to a melodic line. One of the most musically sound works of its time, 'Dido and Aeneas' offers the listener a variety of musical styles and themes within its short duration. Long, lyrical lines, rhythmic interludes, and an intriguing cast of characters make for a great day at the opera.
