まず印象に残るのは2017年冬からミラノ・スカラ座の音楽監督に就任することになったシャイーのすこぶる闊達な指揮。1998年にスカラ座で録音されたCDと比べても、さらに緩急自在で、まさに水を得た魚とはこのことだ。演出は手堅い。印象派〜後期印象派の名画を模した映像が局面に応じて画家マルチェッロのキャンヴァスと背景に投影されるハイテク仕様が唯一の新味だが、さして大きな不満はない(斬新な読み替えを望まれる方はヘアハイム演出をどうぞ)。ヒロインのガル・ジェイムズは血色良く、結核で死にそうには見えないが、いかにもはかなげで清楚な従来のイメージよりもっと積極的な女性に作られているのは演出家の意図としても、彼女自身もこれに応じて非常に達者な演唱を見せる。今後、注目すべきソプラノ歌手の一人だろう。対するアキレス・マチャドはいかにも不器用そうなキャラ(ひょっとして地か?)。口八丁手八丁のカヴァレッティ(マルチェッロ)とは、いいデコボコ･コンビだ。カルメン・ロメウは見るからにスペイン人のムゼッタ。野性味満点のキャラで役には合っている。南欧系のキャスト、スタッフが優勢で舞台もカラフル。あまり湿っぽくない『ボエーム』と言えば、分かりやすいだろうか。
