Musically, 1999 achieved something rare in pop music: It capitalized on a very specific mood from the time it was created, yet the resulting sound is timeless.

私はプリンスをほとんど聞きませんが、「パープルレイン」と この「1999」が代表作であり、そして人気作であることは知って いました。 今回初めて「1999」を聞きました。さすが天才の作品、親しみやすくて ポップなサウンドです。誰が聞いても好きになる…… と思ったのですが、結構難しかったです。 この作品は、プリンスが心血を注いだ究極のダンスミュージックだと 思います。しかし私はダンスに特化した音楽をほとんど聞きません ので、これが逆に敷居の高さにつながりました。 では、２年ほど前に聞いた「パープルレイン」はどうだったのか。 こちらはギターを中心にしたロックアルバムです。収録曲の ほとんどが大ヒットして、私もリアルタイムでMTVなどで見聞きして いましたので、なじみがありました。 プリンスは、「1999」でダンスを極めたので、「パープルレイン」 でロックに特化。なんとなくですが、「同じ作品は作らない」という 天才ぶりが発揮されたのかもしれません。

どのベストアルバムにも収録されているLittle Red Corvette、1999以外にFreeもお勧めです。名作といわれることも多いですが、ＬＩＶＥで演奏される曲は少ないです。

殿下がニーズを意識して製作し始めた、そんな作品です、たぶん。実際、1曲目のタイトル曲から3曲目までの流れは完璧すぎます。また、終盤の楽曲群も熱い曲あり、それをクールダウンさせる曲ありと、粒がそろっています。強いて挙げると、1曲が長い(11曲で約70分)ことが弱点と言える…のかもしれません。
