マーカス・ミラーとの共演で一躍有名になり、エリカ・バドゥ、デイヴィッド・サンボーン、チャカ ・カーンなどと共演する売れっ子になったドラマー、プージー・ベル。本作は彼の5枚目となるリーダー作。タイトルの『Suga Top』とは、彼の出身地であるピッツバーグの黒人地区の俗語。マーカス・バンドでの盟友、マイケル“パッチェズ”スチュワートやボビー・スパークスらと共に、2ホーン・トップによるミディアム・グルーヴ全開のファンク/R&Bサウンドを展開。随所に女性ヴォーカルをフィーチュアしつつ、その外見とは裏腹の綿密なるサウンドが印象的でもある。ジャズとR&Bを融合させた彼の最も得意とするアプローチは、適度なディープさと心地よさが存在する。
