1985年に発表されたポーグスのセカンド・アルバム『ラム酒、愛、そして鞭の響き』。彼らを自身の前座に起用したエルヴィス・コステロによるプロデュース。アイルランド系であるコステロは、ポーグスの斬新さをうまく作品に定着させることで彼らの魅力を十二分に引き出し、本作を全英トップ20入りするヒット作に仕上げた（と同時に、コステロはベーシストのケイトも自分の嫁さんとしてさらっていった、とメンバーは回想していた）。“ブラウン・アイ〜”といった自作曲ではマクゴウワンのソングライターとしての才能が垣間見れるし、また “ダーティ・オールド・タウン”のような古い曲を若い世代にも訴えることのできる楽曲として生き還らせた手腕も見事だった。
