Yo, ho, ho, ho, it's a pirate's life for Hans Zimmer! Given that he scored the new Jack Sparrow adventure back-to-back with his brilliant soundtrack for The Da Vinci Code, one might have forgiven composer Hans Zimmer for taking the easy option here. No such thing, as he has produced one of his most dynamic action scores yet. A blistering collection of salty shanties, jigs and hornpipes, played with often astonishing vigor by a full orchestra and augmented by organ and bass-guitar embellishments.

The sprightly Jack Sparrow gets things off to a brisk start, thanks to its playful motif, which is first carried by a cello solo before being taken up by the full orchestra. Darker elements are brought in with such tracks as The Kraken and I've Got My Eye on You, among them threatening chorals and some forceful, low-register playing from the brass and string sections. Unquestionably, this is rip-roaring stuff, put together with flair and imagination. Just crank up the volume and enjoy the ride.

前作の音楽は、正確にはハンス・ジマーの手...

前作の音楽は、正確にはハンス・ジマーの手によるものではなく、彼の率いる作曲家集団の一人によるもの。「そういう」傾向をもつ集団なので、この時点で既にかなりハンス・ジマー色だが、第２作で改めて主宰がメインに参入。このことによって、良くも悪くもサウンドがメジャーなものになってしまった。ビートやシンセにその色が認められても、時代やキャラクターを強く表現していた前作の音楽はやはり完全にはハンス・ジマーのものではなく、言ってみればインディーズ音楽の味わいのようなものがあったのだが、大スターによって更に高い舞台から光を浴びる今回の音楽は、彼の仕事としては決して悪いものではないのに、同じテーマでもどこか大量生産的で、なぜか耳に残らない。
