Word combinations such as "daringly slow" are not encountered in descriptions of Martha Argerich's playing, for her impulses do not run in that direction, but always seem to be surging ahead, pressing forward with impetuous brilliance that astonishes without ever suggesting mere display. By coincidence, this EMI release of material from 1978 and 1979 recitals appears just after her first solo recital in nearly two decades, and it is a vivid reminder of her unique artistry. The Bach C minor Partita is neither romanticized nor scholarly, but clear-eyed and forthright, energetic in its attention to rhythms and voicings while by no means lacking in gravity. The tragic implications of the Bach are brought to fruition in the unbearable grief of the Chopin C minor Nocturne, after which the cascading octaves of the C sharp minor Scherzo arrive like a sudden storm. Argerich plays the Bartok Sonata with tremendous drive and, after a brief set of dances by Ginastera--touching reminders of her Argentine roots--she launches into a Prokofiev Seventh Sonata that rivals Horowitz for pyrotechnic flair.

アルゲリッチは、スタジオよりライヴのほうが活き活きしているようだ。 曲目もスタジオ録音にないものが多く嬉しい。

本盤におさめられた演奏は、いずれも１９７８〜１９７９年にかけてコンセルトヘボウにおいて行われたアルゲリッチによるピアノコンサートのライヴ録音であるが、いずれも至高の超名演と高く評価したい。超名演の上に超を５つ付けてもいいくらいの究極の名演とも言える。本盤には、バッハ、ショパン、バルトーク、プロコフィエフなどのピアノソナタ及び小品や、アルゲリッチの母国にもゆかりがある作品であるビナステラのアルゼンチン舞曲集などがおさめられており、楽曲どうしの間には何らの共通項も見当たらないが、アルゲリッチの超絶的な演奏によって、これらのすべての演奏全体が大理石で出来た堅固な構造物のような壮大な芸術作品に仕上がっているという趣きさえ感じさせるのが素晴らしい。アルゲリッチのピアノは、本盤の演奏においても例によって即興的とも言うべき自由奔放そのものだ。人間離れした超絶的な技量を発揮しつつ、変幻自在のテンポ設定や、思い切ったアッチェレランド、そしてリタルランドを駆使して、実にスリリングな演奏を展開している。強靭な打鍵は女流ピアニスト離れした圧倒的な迫力を誇っているし、繊細な抒情の表現における心の込め方も尋常ならざるレベルに達しており、表現の幅は桁外れに広いと言える。これだけ自由奔放とも言える演奏を展開しているにもかかわらず、楽曲全体の造型がいささかも弛緩することなく、そしてスケールの雄大さを失わないというのは、アルゲリッチだけに可能な圧巻の至芸と言える。これだけの圧巻のピアノ演奏は、録音にはとても入り切らないと言えるだろう。実際のところ、既発売のＣＤは、今から３０年以上も前のライヴ録音ということもあり、必ずしも満足できる音質とは言い難い面があった。しかしながら、今般のＳＡＣＤ盤は、従来盤とは次元が異なる圧倒的な超高音質に生まれ変わったと言えるところであり、おそらくは現在望み得る最高の音質と言える。アルゲリッチの歴史的な超名演を、このような究極の鮮明な音質で味わうことができることを喜ぶとともに、ＳＡＣＤ化を行ったＥＭＩに対して心から大きな拍手を送りたい。
