ティーレマンも得意にしている曲だが、世界初の市販映像、しかも次の録画がそう簡単に現われそうもない演目であることを考えると、ちょっと複雑な気持ちにならざるをえない映像。つまり、非常にポップでキッチュな舞台なのだ。もともと地味なオペラなのだから、面白く見せてやろうというサービス精神は分からぬでもないが、緑色の天使たち、赤紫色のキリスト像など、色使いが何とも奔放。宗教会議での大型リムジンの登場なども、違和感なしとは言えない。亡き妻ルクレツィアの亡霊の着ぐるみにも、思わず笑ってしまう。ヴェントリスは歌いっぷりからも非常に知的なテノールであることが分かるが、パルジファルといいパレストリーナといい、どうしてこんなに自分に合わない役ばかりを歌いたがるのだろうか。どう見ても、死期の迫った(この演出では実際、第3幕の終わりで死ぬことになる)老作曲家に見えないのは困る。シュトルックマン以下、宗教会議の出席者たちは皆、適役。二人のズボン役(前記の亡霊を除けば、このオペラには女性が一人も出てこない)も好演だし、ヤングの指揮は重厚な、堂々たるものだ。
