COM Painside DARK WORLD BURDEN altWith so much of today's modern metal being little more than downtuned riffs and growler/screamer vocals, it's always good to hear something that incorporates a lot of elements of the old school that just plain kicks ass. For the first time this year, a band I'd never heard of before has emerged with an album that just flat out kicked my ass. That band is Painside. For those that don't know (and, up until about 2 weeks ago I was one of you), Painside is a straight up, no bullshit metal band who's sound is very reminiscent of bands like Metal Church mixed with some Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. Before you make a decision based on those comparisons though, take into consideration that I'm talking about elements of their sound. I'm not saying they are a clone band in any way. As you listen to their DARK WORLD BURDEN, you can't help but hear the comparisons though. Listening to songs like The Deviant as an example, you can't help but think of some of the faster material from the first three Metal Church albums, tempered nicely by a chorus where vocalist Guilherme Sevens sounds somewhat similar to Bruce Dickinson. In fact, that Dickinson reference comes up throughout the disc. Songs like This Dark World find Sevens singing in a lower register with a deep European slant, before unloading into a loud chorus that could easily be mistaken for the higher end yell of Dickinson himself if you didn't know what you were listening to. Simply put, Guilherme Sevens is an astounding metal vocalist that simply sounds great. That said, the rest of this band are no slouches either. Guitarists Carlos Saione and Daemon Ross are monsterous players. Their powerful metal blasts on songs like Sand Messiah are awesome. On this song especially, the 'chugga chugga' riffs drive the song and get your head banging hard. Sand Messiah is probably the best song on the disc; a song that in many ways reminds me of just about every fast song Primal Fear has recorded in the last decade. Drummer Andre Andrade and bassist Marcelo Val are thunderous on the bottom end as well. They drive most of the material forward with a straight up, old school 4/4 timing and adjusting speeds to fit the music. Where Sand Messiah is a fast scorcher, songs like Forsaken slow it down a bit without losing any intensity (in large part due to the fine playing by Andrade and Val). PITRIFF RATING - 9/10 - I could rave on and on about this band. At this point, DARK WORLD BURDEN is the best album that's come through my IPod this year. High energy, powerful and a home run for fans that like the older school power metal/thrash-ish sound, Painside might be a band for you to look into. For me, it's a home run. ~Chris Akin http://www.myspace.com/painsideofficial Track Listing: 01. Ignite the fire 02. Where darkness rules 03. Collapse the lies 04. The deviant 05. This dark world 06.
