前作である２枚組大作のFragileで一度、NINは終わった感がある。しかしながらこのアルバム、前２作の突き抜けた激しさ、深淵は感じないがポップで乗りやすい聞きやすいアルバムになっている。

ライヴ盤やDVDを間に挟んだものの、スタジオ作としては「Fragile」以来６年ぶりとなる、2005年4th。 これまでの作品とは違い、１曲目はとても穏やかに幕を開ける。ある意味「Fragile」以上に繊細で、触れれば崩れてしまいそうなほど儚げ。 これまでのアルバムで嫌でも感じ取れていた重さや暗さが払拭されており、聴き易いともいえるし、古いファンには物足りないともいえる。 インダストリアル要素は控えめ。ビートも、打ち込みではなくデイヴ・グロール参加による生ドラム。「Fragile」で初登場した、あの零れ落ちるようなピアノの音も随所に入っている。 あくまで歌やメロディを重視したアルバムで、電子音の類は控えめ。しかし、そのセンスの高さはさすがである。静かな曲などは、ライヴ盤「And All That Could Have Been」のdisc2のような雰囲気。それでいて「Pretty hate machine」のポップさをさらに洗練させた感がある。 もちろん攻撃性を忘れたわけではない。ライヴで盛り上がりそうな曲も多い。 自分の中に鬱屈していた毒は「Fragile」で出し切ったのか、長い長いトンネルからやっと抜け出したような、穏やかな光差すアルバム。

NIN史上、最もﾀﾞｲﾚｸﾄで肉体的なﾛｯｸを真正面から叩きつけてきた作品。ﾃﾝｼｮﾝあげてきたい時には悪くない。⑨のﾋﾞｰﾄは鬼！
