Just having graduated from high school, best friends Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) find themselves having to make their fist adult decisions about their lives. Their plans to rent a place and move in together look threatened by Rebecca's plans to go off to college, while Enid finds herself having to make up classes during the summer if she wants to officially graduate. Playing a joke on a lonely older guy, Seymour (Steve Buscemi), the two set him up on a fake date but end up becoming friends with him, particularly Enid, who finds kinship with this other lost soul and the two slowly become friends. Based on a comic book by Daniel Clowes, who also co-wrote the script, director Terry Zwigoff's film is a genuine original with all-round great performances, especially Thora Birch as the acid tongued, perfectly dressed Enid, always ready with a put down but hiding her fear of the future underneath it all.
