「舞坂町はとなり町・森見町と戦争を始めます。開戦日5月7日。」ある日届いた、となり町との戦争のお知らせ。偵察業務に就かされた“僕”は、業務遂行のために、対森見町戦争推進室の“香西さん”と夫婦生活を始める。戦時にもかかわらず、町は平穏を崩さない。かろうじて戦争状態と分かるのは、日々のニュースで発表される戦死者の数だけ。だが、戦争は淡々とした日常生活を静かに侵食していき、“僕”は、知らず知らずのうちに、その戦争の中心にいたのだ…。
