第一次世界大戦下のカリフォルニア州サーリナス。　24歳のキャルは農場を営む父アダムが、兄のアーロンばかりを可愛がっていると感じ、反抗的な問題児扱いされていた。落ちこぼれで愛に飢えたキャルを、恋人のアブラは何かと気にかけていた。　ある日、キャルは死んだと聞かされていた母ケートが実は生きていて、モントレーで酒場を経営していることを知る。アダムが野菜の輸送中の事故で無一文になった時、キャルは父親を助けようと、ケートに資金を借りに行くが・・・。
