マイルス・デイヴィスがプレッシティッジを退いてコロンビアとの契約を結んだのは、大編成の作品を作りたかったからだといわれているが、皮肉にもコロンビア第一作である本作は、この当時のレギュラーコンボによる本作だった。何よりもこの作品を特徴付けたのは、マイルスのミュ－ト・トランペットの音色だった。のちに“卵の殻の上を歩く男”と賞されたマイルスのリリシズムが詰まった演奏は時が経つに連れてさらに輝きを増してくる。
