Reel Time Standards The concept behind this album was to record standards which had been used in movie soundtracks. Sometimes it is only a few bars, but to us the music makes the movie - or at least gives it an added dimension by evoking appropriate emotions at different times. None of these tunes was written specifically to be performed as part of a movie soundtrack, and we made it a point to not include musicals in our accumulated catalogue of movies. We also experimented with a new/old recording process. The tunes were recorded first using a digital processor. Then during mixdown, the digital was run through an analog reel-to-reel deck and then back to digital. This seemed to open up the sound, giving it more depth and warmth. See what you think. It seems to us that a lot of the current jazz recordings are just too perfect. They sound over-rehearsed, arranged and contrived. Although we strive to express our musical talents to the highest of our abilities, the excitement of the jazz experience is taking risks and seeing where those risks take you. Consequently, as in any live performance, each note is not always perfectly played. We happen to agree with Thelonious Monk when he said, There are no wrong notes, and in this compilation, as in all of our works, we have chosen not to exclude the human element from our recordings. Although I had worked with Henry a few times, I had never met Dominic until this recording date. We did a couple of rehearsals to get acquainted, then went into the studio. The tune, I Remember You, which we have included here, was the first time we had played this together as a trio and in this particular treatment. Hey, that's real jazz!! The day we did the trio recordings was the day of our Celebration of Life party for my dad, Alphonse Markaverich, who made his transition on June 25, 2007. Papa loved to come to the clubs and concerts when I lived on Cape Cod along with my Mum. I felt his presence with me on this day, and each and every time I play, I know that they are both with me in spirit, groovin' on the tunes. Thanks to everyone who reached out to me during this time and helped me honor these two special people who had a great part in making me who I am today. Mike Markaverich THE STARS Mike Markaverich A native of Nashua, New Hampshire, Mike Markaverich was a premature baby whose experience in the incubator resulted in his blindness. Mike began playing a toy piano at age three and took lessons at Perkins School for the Blind where he attended grammar school. He graduated second in his class from Bishop Guertin High School and studied at Dartmouth College where he became interested in jazz and decided to make music his career. After attaining a graduate degree at the University of New Hampshire, Mike began his professional career on Cape Cod where he worked as a solo performer and in various combo settings in major area nightspots for over ten years. In November 1988 he moved to Sarasota where he has been a regular member of the local jazz scene. Mike has appeared with Dave McKenna, Maxine Sullivan, Ira Sullivan, Buddy DeFranco, and Chuck Hedges among others. He has also appeared in concert in various venues, appeared on television and radio, given workshops in schools and colleges, teaches jazz piano, and has produced nine of his own recordings. Drummer HENRY ETTMAN, a St. Louis native, began playing jazz in this mid teens, working around St. Louis and Chicago with area musicians and for such headliners as comedian Lenny Bruce, guitarists Grant Green and Howard Roberts, vocalists Bev Kelly and Rebecca Parris, pianist Eddie Higgins and pianist/vocalist Judy Roberts. He spent several years with lounge groups in Florida and the Southeast as well as the Reno/Tahoe area. While residing in Portland, Oregon he appeared with artists such as Dave Frishberg, Randy Porter and George Mitchell.
