Music offers few elixirs as heady as the song cycles of Gustav Mahler. Full of paradoxes, poised delicately between innocence and experience, haunted by death while gazing heavenward, they seem to emanate from the most private recesses of the soul. Janet Baker imbues them with a warmth of expression that eludes other singers, and in conductor Sir John Barbirolli, she finds an ideal partner. The two set relaxed tempos and float along on them with the rapt concentration of dreamers. Nowhere is this more evident than in the concluding Ruckert lied, 'Ich bin die Welt abhanden gekommen,' where the voice really does seem "alone in my heaven, in my song." A truly unforgettable performance and wisely placed as the last cut on the CD, for nothing could possibly follow it.
