前作『エロティカ』や大いに話題となった写真集で、エロティック路線を決定づけたマドンナが、一転スピリチュアルなイメージをも垣間見せる次の一手が本作だった。1994年発表。30年代風のイメージを巧みに使用したジャケットなども印象的。シングルM-2辺りは話題を集めたが、商業的にはコマーシャルさに欠ける部分もあり、作品の出来にも関わらず全米3位どまりとなってしまった。
