リストはシューベルトの歌曲をこよなく愛していました。そしてその「愛」は、好きな曲はピアノで弾きたいというピアニストの自然な想いのままに「編曲」という実を結びました。編曲といっても、ただ単にピアノ伴奏部と歌の旋律を一緒に弾くというだけではなく、原曲の内容を咀嚼してさらに効果的なピアノ表現が付け加えられています。そのため、曲によっては多少厚化粧風にはなったものの、立派な「ピアノ音楽」として生命を得たのでした。ロシアのベテラン・ヤブロンスカヤは実におおらかな構えで14曲を奏でています。
