Open Range

Bassist-composer John Davey is excited to announce the release of his new CD Open Range, featuring guitarist Ken McGloin and drummer Dean Sharp. The recording was produced by Davey and Sharp, recorded primarily at The Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck NY by Paul Antonell, with additional recording at Dean's Elbo Projekt Room in Kingston, NY. The recording was mastered by the amazing producer-guitarist-composer-sound sculptor David Torn. The record features ten new compositions by Davey, as well as two classic Western tunes Home On the Range and Wayfaring Stranger. The music covers a wide range of the American landscape - a hobo stew of acoustic-electric power-trio/country/indie-rock/jazz/improv. This recording was partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign and a creative activity grant from SUNY. John Davey came of musical age in the late 1960's and early '70's in Central New Jersey, when FM radio aired an eclectric mix of music - Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Pink Floyd and Johnny Cash coexisted with John Coltrane on one program! This eclectric approach had a profound effect on the young musician - performing in country-rock bands, original jazz combos, experimental performance-art ensembles, and backing singer-songwriters. He was playing the electric bass, until one day in 1972, he heard bassist Mark Helias at a jazz concert at Rutgers University. He immediately bought an upright and started lessons with Mark. Later came lessons with Dave Holland and Gary Peacock, all masters of improvisation and creative modern music. John moved to Seattle in 1976, where he dug into the upright, performing as a street musician with the swing trio The Savoy Marmots at Pike Place Market. Returning to the East Coast in 1979, John formed the original jazz trio Interweave with old high school friend, pianist-composer Frank Giasullo, performing throughout the Northeast for ten years, and recorded their album Expedition at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in 1986. John moved to upstate NY in 1979 to raise a family, build a house, begin a teaching career, and to develope his writing skills. He formed his first ensembles playing his original music in Syracuse, appearing at The Syracuse JazzFest in 1995 and 1996. Over the years, he has performed with a wide array of artists - The Catskill Symphony, jazz pianists Mike Holober, Francesca Tanksley and Jeremy Wall, saxophonists Al Galodoro, Erica Lindsay, Brian Patneaude, Jonathan Lorentz, and the late J.R. Montrose, guitarists John Stowell and Chuck D'Aloia, the late percussionist Collin Walcott (from the band Oregon), and jazz cellist Hank Roberts. Through his teaching at SUNY Oneonta, he has received many grants for recordings and performances, especially for his series The Jazz Composers & Improvisors Project, which has brought together many of the finest jazz artists of Central NY. Ken McGloin is the go-to guitarist for creative music in NY's fertile Hudson Valley. His focus was on jazz throughout high school and college (at the University of Miami's excellent music department), and his musical education included tutorials with jazz greats Dave Holland, Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie. Ken even studied classical guitar for five years and played in a band called White Boys on Swing which combined Django Reinhardt gypsy jazz with hip-hop. And, if that's still not enough musical diversity for you, Ken's hard-core alternative band, Lunchmeat, played the mainstage at the 1994 Woodstock Festival. Ken has written music for two of MTV's most popular series, The Real World and Road Rules. His music has also been used on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and ESPN network to name a few. Dean Sharp is a prolific creative percussionist, composer, producer and remixer. He has played and/or recorded with a strikingly diverse array of creative artists including Moby, Brad Mehldau, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Elliott Sharp, Michael Bisio, Joe Lovano, Marc Ribot, John Stubblefield, Jazz Criminals, Hugh Brodie, Tony Levin, Steve Swallow, Carter Burwell, Todd Sickafoose's Blood Orange, Kris Davis, and Ani Defranco.
