Around Each Corner

Jess Likus' debut CD, Around Each Corner is full of surprises. It starts off swinging, spins you to the ethereal, takes you down home and tells you stories. Blending acoustic guitars, mandolins and ukuleles with harmony vocals, the listener is treated to a variety of styles that keep you guessing. There're jazzy moments, poignant pieces, old timey jaunts and songs to make you feel good. The breezy Blues Song Blues kicks things off with a swinging little tune about love gone wrong. Following that is Monday, a positive choral ode to a normally blue day which rides the wave of six and eight string ukuleles. I Do Not Have the Blues is a fun fingerpicking tune told by someone who looks around and sees that things aren't so bad at home. Edward's Tune is a latin tinged instrumental a la David Grisman. After that, Heartless Town is an old style country ballad that tells the tale of a shunned woman and her young boy who grows up to exact his revenge. The ukuleles reappear for I Got It Bad for You, a Roarin' Twenties ditty about flippin' over a dream girl. The Caribbean flavored Paradise makes you want to kick off your shoes, put your toes in the sand by the sea and have a nice cool tropical drink. Then it's time for Norman and Peter, an old timey flavored double mandolin instrumental that pays respect to Messers Blake and Ostroushko. The it's time for the jump feel of Shelli Lynne with an E, a tribute to true love. Nowhere Blues is a satirical spin about the Great Recession of 2008. Next comes a barroom story of the bad girl that you just can't resist featuring a beery chorus. Lost Angel tells the tale of a woman who felt wronged and just decided to take off and see what's out there for her. The album closes with This Old D-28, a foot-stompin' true story about how Brian acquired his first Martin guitar - in his Dad's bar on a cold November night.
