最近発売されたとある小説によって、一躍脚光を浴びるようになったヤナーチェク。ヤナーチェクの作品と言えば、巷間、シンフォ二エッタなどが最も有名であるが、私は、オペラにこそヤナーチェクの真の魅力が込められていると考えている。ヤナーチェクは、モラヴィアの民俗音楽を自作の様々な旋律に活かしていったが、そうした独特の作風が最も色濃く出ているのはオペラだと思うからである。しかしながら、ヤナーチェクのオペラは、チェコ語でかかれているとともに、ストーリーも一筋縄ではいかないものが多く、鑑賞する際には、どうしても対訳と首っ引きにならざるを得ない。それ故に、ヤナーチェクがオペラに配した名曲の数々をゆったりとした気持ちで味わうことがなかなか難しいと言える。そのような中にあって、本盤のようなオペラからの名曲を抜粋したＣＤが発売されたのは何と言う幸せなことであろうか。本盤は、ヤナーチェクのオペラの中でも最も有名な「利口な牝狐の物語」と、シリアスな最後のオペラである「死者の家から」を収録した好選曲であり、ブレイナー＆ニュージーランド交響楽団による名演や、価格の安さなども相まって、現在望み得る最高の名ＣＤと高く評価したい。
