Saxophonist and composer Greg Johnson is becoming widely known as a creative force in young international jazz community. Born in Mission Viejo, California, Greg was raised in Central Pennsylvania where he played his first gigs. He is commonly known for his work with jazz group 'Megalodon.' Greg started gaining national recognition in 2004 as a finalist in the Gibson-Baldwin Grammy Band competition and was named in Downbeat Magazine as one of the nation's top soloists in his age group. He was a finalist in the 2008 and 2010 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competitions. In 2009, he won the Yamaha Young Performing Artist competition for Jazz Saxophone and in March of 2010 he was selected for the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead residency at the Kennedy Center. He was selected as a part of the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Music Festival in Chicago, and awarded another Outstanding Performance in Jazz award from Downbeat Magazine in 2010. Greg completed his bachelors degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Colorado where he played in the school's nationally-regarded top ensembles. He is now attending the University of Southern California as a Doctoral student and Teaching Assistant in Jazz Studies under Bob Mintzer and Alan Pasqua.
