前作『ワーキングマンズ･デッド』で､ＣＳＮばりのフォーク風のコーラス曲や､ジェリー･ガルシアのルーツにもあったカントリーの要素を聴かせたグレイトフル･デッドがその路線を更に押し進めて作り上げた作品(1970年発表)｡ガルシアのペダルスティールやデヴィッド･グリスマンのマンドリンなどをフィーチャーし､全体にアコースティックでユルい味わいのある本作だが､後にデッドの代表曲となる｢トラッキン｣､｢シュガー･マグノリア｣あたりでのサウンドはやはり魅力的に光る｡
