石川晶、鈴木宏昌、鈴木弘、村岡建、稲葉国光。5本の線が交差したとき、ジャズは新章の扉を開いた。伝説のコンボ、フリーダム・ユニティ。ここには永遠の先鋭が刻まれている。

石川晶、鈴木宏昌、鈴木弘、村岡建、稲葉国光。当時日本のジャズ・シーンを牽引していた5人の気鋭のミュージシャンが集ったコンボ、フリーダム・ユニティ。活動期間はわずか5ヶ月と短いが、先鋭的かつ独創的な音楽性は高く評価され、2枚のアルバムとともにその存在は伝説となった。2作目にして最終作となる本作『ダウン・バイ・ザ・ネイキッド・シティ』は1971年にビクターから＜日本のジャズ＞シリーズの1枚としてリリースされた。メンバーのひとりである鈴木弘が現在でも「生涯で最高の演奏だ」だと言い切る本作。緻密な構成、肉感的なグルーヴ、エッジの効いたインプロヴィゼイション。緊張感は終始途切れることなく、聴く者を深みへと連れ去って行く。それまでのジャズとこれからのジャズを内包した、歴史的名盤である。 text by 尾川雄介(UNIVERSOUND/DEEP JAZZ REALITY)
