イギリスの大作曲家、エドワード・エルガー...

イギリスの大作曲家、エドワード・エルガーは1920年以降は作曲家としてよりも指揮者としての活動に重きを置き、また録音にも取り組んだお陰で、現在でも作曲家の自身による解釈が聴ける貴重な資料となっています。作曲家の解釈と言うとわりと冷めたというか、客観的に演奏する人が多いような気もしますが、エルガーはどれも細部までしっかりと芯のある熱い演奏です。熱いと言っても爆演とかではなく、充実した内容と言った方が良いでしょうか。オーケストラはエルガーと関わりの深いロンドン交響楽団をはじめ、ロンドン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、ロイヤル・アルバート・ホール管弦楽団、新交響楽団を振っていますが、さすがロンドン交響楽団はこの頃から上手です。また5つのピアノ即興曲ではエルガーのピアノが聴けます。これはなかなか貴重だと思います。威風堂々などはSP盤に収められるよう、カットや速すぎるテンポ設定があるのは時代と言えるでしょうか。 9枚目の余白にはエルガーと同時期に活動したイギリスの演奏家によるエルガー集となっており、ローレンス・コリングウッド指揮、ロンドン交響楽団による『カラクタクス』エイスリー・マレイ指揮、ニュー・ライト交響楽団による『ミーナ』ハイドン・ウッド指揮、ライト交響楽団の『ミーナ』ランドン・ドナルド指揮、ロンドン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団『戴冠式行進曲』が収録、エルガーのタクトと聴き比べできる。復刻は戦前の音源としてならまずまずのもの。 CDはクラムシェル仕様ですが、本家からの復刻なのでライナーがついています。

ここ数年、クラシックの組み物はクラムシェル・ボックスに、ロックは５ＣＤオリジナルアルバム・クラシックスに買い替えて、保管スペースの削減を図っているが、遂にこれも出ましたか。オリジナルはゴールド・ディスクだったけど、そこまで望んではいけないのだろうなぁ。グラモフォン・アワード受賞作。この値段。今から買う人は本当に幸いだ。もちろん私も買います。パール・レーベルの『エルガー・エディション(アコースティック録音)』もクラムシェル・ボックスで出ないものか。
