1967年発表の衝撃的1st。デビューアルバムにして『死』へと向かっていた彼らのおそろしく完成度の高い作品です。当時アメリカで盛んだったウエストコーストのバンドとは全く逆のベクトルの内省的な暗さを持ったバンドです。フロントマンの詩人ジム・モリソンが持つ『死』への執着を音として形に残していく作業こそが彼の存在意義だったんだと思います。ブルースやクラシックやジャズをも内包したサウンドにジム・モリソンの持つ暗さと重さ、それにギターのロビー・クレイガーのPOPな感覚が見事に調和した歴史的名盤。その後そのPOPさが彼らの命とりになっていくのはなんとも皮肉な話です。映画『地獄の黙示録』に使われた『Thd End』は圧巻！オススメは①③⑤⑥⑦⑪
