First prize winner at the 1981 Cleveland International Piano Competition and silver medalist at the 1985 Van Cliburn Competition, French pianist Philippe Bianconi studied at the Nice conservatoire with Simone Delbert-Fevrier and later with Gaby Casadesus in Paris and Vitalij Margulis in Freiburg. Since his Carnegie Hall debut in 1987, Bianconi has performed in major concert halls and festivals around the world. The interpretation of French music has always been of great importance in his repertoire, both in the concert hall and the recording studio. This new disc of Debussy Preludes for La Dolce Volta displays Bianconi's profound attention to detail and irresistible poetic imagination, and reveals the riches of Debussy's music in all it's startling modernity.

ラヴェルのライブ全集盤でも、クオリティの高い演奏を示したビアンコーニですが、このドビュッシーも、ナイーヴな奥の深い解釈が印象的。突発的に仕掛けるとかではなく、自然な音楽から創ろうとするアプローチが心地良い。 Lyrixでのシューマン、シューベルト、ラヴェルなどでも、個性的な、よりも楽譜からの深い読みは興味深いところ。

さて前奏曲集は、第１巻と第２巻ではかなり曲調が違う傾向にある。第１巻では亜麻色の髪の乙女など有名曲が多く、内容も分かりやすいポピュラーなものが多い。反対に第２巻ではほとんど無名な曲が多くて、内容も不協和音を伴って難解なものが多い。従って人によっては得手不得手が生じる結果となる。ビアンコーニはどうだろうか？両巻ともに幻想性と客観性の調和のとれた演奏を聴かせてくれている。時には美しく、時には憂鬱に感性の豊かな演奏を繰り広げている。私は第２巻は殆ど聴いたためしがないが、これは違和感なく通して聴ける。ライナー（日本語！）にも書いてある通り楽譜に忠実な演奏を心がけているようだ。強弱、メトロノーム指定など、誠実に守ろうとしているらしい。昔あった新即物主義に近い考え方なのかもしれない。しかしここではその手法よりもイマジネーションの方が先行していて成功しているようだ。この辺りは技術と創造性の絶妙な調和がもたらすものではないのだろうか。ピアノはヤマハのコンサートモデルらしいが、暖かみのある良い音色だ。ペダルトーンの残響成分が豊かで幻想的な雰囲気に拍車をかけている。この音色の良さも特筆すべきだろう。
