CMUとは、Contemporary Music Unitの略らしいです。 これは、'71年の1st。 いかにも時代を感じさせるアングラ・サイケ・（ジャズ）ロックですが、このアングラ感とチープなスペイシー感が逆にこのバンドの味となっています。 スペイシーなブルース「Slow & Lonesome Blues」、愛らしい「Japan」、コミカルな「Clown」などもおもしろいですが、ヴィオラとグロッケンシュピールで始まる11分以上に及ぶタイトル曲「Open Space」は、不思議な空間を作り出すアヴァン・スペイシー・サイケで、このバンドの白眉といえます。
