These concerti have achieved iconic status within a violinist's repertory. Gil Shaham is the leading violinist of his generation. Conductor David Robertson conducts three of the concerti performances. Four of the world's leading orchestras are heard here, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. 1930年代にヴァイオリン協奏曲の傑作が多いのはよく知られた話だが、それをまとめて演奏、録音するという企画は不思議なことにこれまでなかったと思う。今回の第1集以外では、バルトーク、プロコフィエフ、シェーンベルク、ウォルトンという大物があるし、ほかにもヒンデミット、シマノフスキ、ブロッホとワクワクするようなラインナップである。シャハムがどこまで録音するのか不明だが、是非頑張ってほしい。女流ヴァイオリニスト全盛の今シャハムの演奏を聴くと、男性ならではの良さを再確認する。テクニックに余裕があるし、響きが厚い。第1集では、ハルトマンが最高の出来。ついでベルク。ストラヴィンスキーも面白い。バーバーはちょっと立派すぎる感も。それにしても、オケがニューヨークフィル、シュターツカペレ・ドレスデン、ＢＢＣ、ボストンと一流揃いで、これがシャハムの個人レーベルというのだから時代は変わったと思わざるをえない。録音優秀。
