Product Description

(This HMV Review is for new items and is only for reference. Novelty will NOT be available for used items despite mentioned bellow.)

Though she made her breakthrough as a Mozart pianist, it is interesting to note that when Mitsuko Uchida placed second in the 1970 Warsaw Chopin Competition the music she chose to play at the awards recital was Schoenberg. Everything about her career has been slow and steady: she made her first recordings when in her mid-30s and the world is just beginning to realize she plays more than Mozart, but Uchida is a remarkably well-rounded, well-read and thoughtful artist who is still growing.
This volume of the Great Pianists series devotes one entire disc to Mozart, including the early Concerto in E-flat and the late Sonata in D major, but the real revelation is the set of 12 Debussy Etudes that occupies most of disc two, arguably Uchida's finest recording as well as the best these remarkable pieces have ever received. Considering that she just began to record Schubert in 1998 and Beethoven in 1999, it would seem that Mitsuko Uchida could be one of the great pianists of the 21st century, too.
