Product Description

This CD concludes with an interview of Sir John Barbiroli by R. Kinloch
Anderson. Recorded at Kingsway Hall, London, England on 21 April, 1964.
(Timing 13 min, 13 sec)
The glorious career of cellist John Barbirolli spanned the lion's share of the 20th century. Thanks to digital technology, his legacy can be shared with generations to come. The recordings found on this two CD collection date from 1911 to 1969, the year before his passing.
GLORIOUS JOHN opens with its earliest recording, 'The Broken Melody,' the piece that started his illustrious career. Though he was just 12 at the time, the recording captures the essence that made him a star. Over the years, not only does his technique become richer and more elegant, but improvements in recording techniques capture the nuances more accurately. The performances with the Halle Orchestra from the early 1950's are a particular treat.
Produced by the Barbirolli Society, the collection presents in chronological order Barbirolli's hard-to-find and live recordings, eschewing the more familiar pieces by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, which are readily found elsewhere. This release is meant to be more than merely the essential Barbirolli collection: it is a biography through music.
