Jacques Offenbach, the „inventor“ of the operetta, died in 1880 – exactly the year in which the last maestro in the field of (so-called) light entertainment was born: Robert Stolz.
100 years later, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Heinz Wallberg, dedicates an unique memorial concert to these two composers, which you have in hand with volume 2 of the „Springtime in Vienna“ DVD series. All of adopted Frenchman Offenbach’s „hits“ can be heard: the overtures from „Orpheus in the underworld“ and „Fair Helen“ and certainly the famous „Barcarole“ from „Hoffmann’s Tales“.
Special emphasis is put on a big part dedicated to the works of Robert Stolz. He is regarded as „the approved ambassador of the three-four time in a time in which the century of the waltz is as far away as the emperor’s beard. He has written the last waltz and the first central European film hit. He owns the double nationality in the old and new world of popular music....“ This is proved by his catchy marches, waltzes and songs: with „Springtime in Vienna“ Robert Stolz lends the name to the festival concerts of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, he has announced „The trees in the Prater are blossoming once again“ – and by doing so, evoked the atmosphere of the imperial city in a very personal way.
The renowned soloists Werner Hollweg (tenor) and Sona Ghazarian (soprano) ensure vocal highlights.
