Nearly Midnight

We started off just playing guitar together every couple months. Then every few weeks. Then every week. And then we were emailing each other riffs and lyric ideas, and writing words to each other's music. Much like the cat who inspired our name, we write music that is diverse within it's own wholeness. Our songs are special because they bring elements of each of our experiences together into an organic whole, for a sound that is uniquely, wonderfully Calico Axe. This is part of our musical magic, bringing together sound environments from the Beatles to the B52s, Tori Amos to Ryan Adams, Arv Prt to J.S. Bach. We're a little bit country, a little bit rock'n'roll ... plus with some classical, folk, and blues thrown in for good measure. We've written a collection of 13 songs we are really proud of and that tell, as we hear it, a sort of story. On this album, we've written wry dirges to adolescent ideas. We've written fairy tales, some you know and maybe a few that feel familiar but you can't tell why. We've rewritten endings we wish were different, and written beginnings we wish had got off the ground. Mostly, we've written love songs. To imaginary lovers and the ones who got away; to losses that still ache at the tips of our fingers; to pieces of ourselves we wish we knew better; and to music itself, to how it has constructed us.
