Product Description

'A beautiful work that covers a tremendous amount of ground, Plunge is fearless, honest and unpredictable; maybe this is the 'plunge' of the title, the brave dive that both musicians take into the unknown land of improvisation, as well as the fragile interior of the human heart. Florence Wetzel --AllAboutJazz [Plunge] is a courageous and delightful musical exploration. Hrayr Attarian -- AllAboutJazz Phil Grenadier (trp) - Bruno Raberg (bass) Duo - PLUNGE - electro-acoustic improvisations. Phil Grenadier is an internationally renowned trumpet player that has performed with John Scofield, Jimmy Cobb, Bill Stewart, Kurt Rosenwinkle and others. Bruno Raberg is a mainstay on the Boston scene and has 7 recordings in his name featuring Chris Cheek, Ben Monder, Matt Wilson, Ted Poor, Mick Goodrick, Donny McCaslin, Bob Moses, Allan Chase and others. He is currently a member of trumpeter Tiger Okoshi's band and has toured in India, Europe, Japan and Ecuador and more. The recording Plunge is a truly unique duo project exploring the world of sounds and shapes. It is all based on acoustic duo improvisations and the effects and sound manipulations were created after the improvisations, the only sound source was trumpet and acoustic bass. From the liner notes: The music on Plunge is all based on duo improvisations or real time compositions, as I like to refer to them. The only written music is Ornette Coleman's Lonely Woman and my The Outermost Island. The inspiration for this recording was an aural vision I had after playing Lonely Woman with Phil in a quartet format. I heard a rich, erratic, and busy soundscape in which the beautiful melody would live. I saw images of desolate streets and a lonely person's inner turmoil, conflicting emotions, and despair. The melody symbolizes the person's heart and soul, which is striving to survive. However, you the listener are free to create your own narrative. This is just mine. The effects and sound manipulations were created after the improvisations. The only sound source was trumpet and acoustic bass. Area 51, Triangulum and Quadratic are what I call double duos. We recorded an improvisation then we recorded again, listening and interacting with the first one. It is always a pleasure to explore the world of sounds and shapes with Phil, and I hope this is only the first of many recordings with him. ---Bruno Rberg, 2012 This recording is a unique one for me. Never have I participated in such an intimate, creative, relaxed endeavor in a recording situation. The music is personal, evocative, pure and striving to be without clichs, freedom in spirit and sound, together. This music is a-technical, a-commercial; it is our voices joined in an honest search for beauty, complexity and depth. It is us. I always love playing with Bruno and this recording is further example why... -- Phil Grenadier 2012.
