This is a real curiosity. There have been many piano arrangements of Beethoven Symphonies, most notably those by the master of the piano reduction, Franz Liszt. But while Liszt's arrangement of the 'Choral Symphony' is for piano alone, here we have a version of the Ninth executed by the teenage Richard Wagner with the orchestra reduced to solo piano but the vocal forces left intact.
Pianist Noriko Ogawa makes the most of youthful Wagner's fanciful recreation in the first three movements. She is then joined by an effective and well-balanced team of soloists who are, in turn, backed by Masaaki Suzuki and his wonderful Bach Collegium Japan Chorus. The Collegium is renowned for their Bach Cantata recordings, and here they light the fires of a one-of-a-kind "Ode to Joy."

第３楽章など、時としてフツーにオーケストラ版を聴いているような錯覚に陥るほど。ブルックナーの音楽は実にオルガン的なのだと改めて感じ入った次第。ただ同じような試みの第４番に比して、やはり編曲そのものに無理が出てしまっているような気もする。例えば終楽章のラストの箇所など、もう一台オルガンがあって音圧を倍増したい。

あぁなるほど。とオケで聴くサウンドをまさにオルガンの音色が紡ぎだしたものだと感じさせる。一人で奏でるのも十分効果があるし、そのようなオルガンでの演奏もまた格別である。しかし、ブルックナーが表現したかった細かな動きや壮大な音響はやはりオケで最大限表現出来ることを改めて再認識させられた。そのような意味でこのディスクは十分価値がある。

Lionel Rogg’s transcription for organ of Bruckner’s 7th is very good. If you purchase this CD, you will enjoy it. Do not forget that Bruckner was an organist and what Oswald Kabasta said： ”Anfaenglich von der Schroffheit der vielen unverbereiteten Tuttieinsaetze im hoechsten Staerkegrade, auch des reich besetzten Blechkoerpers, betroffen, ERKANNTE ICH BALD, DASS BRUCKNER DAMIT NUR VON DER ORGEL, DIE IM PLENO EBEN NUR DIE GANZE SCHAERFE DES ROHRWERKES KENNT, WOHLVERTRAUTE KLANGWIRKUNGEN AUF DAS ORCHESTER UEBERTRAGEN HAT” (Anton Bruckner, Wissenschaftliche und Kuenstleriche Betrachtungen zu den Originalfassungen, p. 49) I would also counsel to Brucknerians to get Thomas Schmoegner’s transcription of Bruckner 4th (label： Edition Lade) played at the symphonic organ of La Madeleine (Paris). The best of the best.
