BEFORE THE FLOOD is a double album souvenir of Dylan's record breaking, critically acclaimed North American tour with The Band and a dynamic document of a transitional period in Dylan's life and art. これはディランがザ・バンドと共演した1974...

これはディランがザ・バンドと共演した1974年のライブ盤です。私はザ・バンドは聞きますが、ディランはほとんど聞きません。ですので、この時にディランが何を表現したかったのか、何をファンに届けたかったのかもわかりません。しかし、ここで演奏されているのは間違いなくロックです。私も知っている代表曲が、ロックなアレンジで次々と披露されます。ディランの熱唱、ザ・バンドの力強くて自由自在な演奏。ロックの数あるライブ盤の中でのトップ10に入るのではないでしょうか。ラスト４曲「見張り塔からずっと」、「追憶のハイウェイ61」、「ライク・ア・ローリング・ストーン」、「風に吹かれて」の連打。特に「ライク・ア…」は、「ロックにおける迫力とは何か」を教えてくれます。

初めて買ったディランのレコードがこれだった。30年以上前の高校生の頃。当時ビートルズ一辺倒だった私は、ジョージやリンゴと共演していたディランとバンドの演奏がいっしょに聞けるということで本作を購入。フォークの神様と称されていたディランでしたが、本作ではエレキギターを抱え、完全にロックした演奏を聞かせてくれる。エレキディランは不評だったとも聞きますが、私はカッコいいの一言に尽きる。

言わずと知れたベストです。ザ・バンドの揺るぎ無いサポートと、タイトなディランがライブの雰囲気と見事にブレンドされて一気に聞かせる。ただラストチューンだけは出来すぎの為オリジナルを推します。妥協なき完璧主義はパワーとハードマインドが必須条件なことを改めて知らしめる。気になるところはもう少しオトが良ければ、ぐらいですか。
