ディランの名作といったこと以上に、時代を動かしたロック史に残る作品として語り継がれる本作は1965年発表。今聴いても、そのテンションは全然色褪せない傑作だ。素人同然だったアル・クーパーのオルガンのリフがロック史上に残る名フレーズとなったM1「ライク・ア・ローリング・ストーン」をはじめ、同年発表されていた前作『ブリンギング〜』と比較して、ロック・アンサンブルとディランの歌声のマッチングは数段良い。本作リリース後のニュー・ポート・フォーク・フェスティヴァルでディランが頭の硬いフォーク・ファンに罵声を浴びた、というのも有名な話。12分にも及ぶクロージング・ナンバーM9「廃墟の街」に圧倒される。
