Sir Colin Davis made his mark as a Berlioz specialist in the 1960s, when he directed an impressive series of recordings that comprised the complete works. Since then he has revisited much of the material for a second or even third time, returning here with a new label and a new orchestra for another pass at the overtures. The orchestra is the redoubtable Dresden Staatskapelle, not a band one associates with this composer, but a wonderfully flexible instrument, fully capable of inflecting this music with all the native character one could wish for.
Davis's approach to Berlioz is well known, elegantly balanced, classical in its reserve, but not lacking in rhythmic vitality either. He lets the music have its head without losing his. The disc is well filled with favorites such as 'Roman Carnival' and utter rarities such as 'Waverly,' Berlioz's first published work, and the delightful 'Les francs juges,' which was actually written even earlier, but clearly shows the kind of imaginative mastery one associates with the creator of the 'Symphonie fantastique.'

ベルリオーズのスペシャリスト、デイヴィスによる精緻極まりない演奏。オケうまい。録音も申し分ない。ドイツトーンではあるのだが、ドビッシーやラヴェルを頂点とするフランス音楽とは違い、ベルリオーズやケルビーニなどは、このような演奏が結構さまになる。これを減点するレビュアーの方達は厳しいです。

ｼｭﾀｰﾂｶﾍﾟﾚ･ﾄﾞﾚｽﾃﾞﾝならではの渋いﾍﾞﾙﾘｵｰｽﾞ！ﾌﾗﾝｽの作曲家の作品は、大概、光彩陸離たる華麗な響きを全面に押し出した演奏をされることが多い。だが、SKDの演奏は違う。音は中音域を中心に溶け合っていて、あたかも艶消し加工を施されたかのような、渋味の効いたｻｳﾝﾄﾞになっているのだ。もっとも、90年代以降のSKDのｻｳﾝﾄﾞは、東西統一と同時にﾒﾝﾊﾞｰが入れ替わったこともあり、全盛期(60?70年代)のｻｳﾝﾄﾞより硬くなっているので、評価を分けるであろう。だが、例えﾍﾞﾙﾘｵｰｽﾞといえども騒々しさを排すところは、この楽団の美学と言ってよく、ﾃﾞｲｳﾞｨｽの確信に満ちた指揮も相俟って素晴らしい出来となっている。そもそもSKDは歌劇場専属のｵｹであり、この手の序曲はこなれたものである。ﾄﾞｲﾂの老舗ｵｹがｲｷﾞﾘｽ人の指揮によってﾌﾗﾝｽの作品を演奏する、そのちぐはぐ感を超越した熱演といえよう。

本能的と言おうか躍動感に満ちつつも柔らかいSKDの響きは、いつもながら驚異的。デイヴィスは悠揚に構え、邪魔をしなければそれだけで音楽になりきってしまう。
