アドルフ・アダンの代表曲、バレエ音楽『ジゼル』の全曲盤。 リチャード・ボニング指揮、モンテカルロ国立歌劇場管弦楽団の演奏で録音されたものである。 ボニングと言えば19世紀に書かれた知られざるバレエ音楽を次々と録音した事で有名だが、この手の有名曲も録音を残している。 ジゼルには新旧録音があり、このモンテカルロとの音源は旧盤にあたる。 ただボニングらしく、カットされた曲も取り入れているのが特徴。 演奏はこれが雰囲気が良いという事を別にすればまずまずであり、決定的な名盤とは言い難いが、資料的な価値は高いだろう。 年代を考えれば充分な音質。

19世紀バレエ上演の慣習として演出と振付が優先され、音楽はあくまで伴奏という位置づけで手を入れられたため、カットや他の作曲家の曲も挿入された。このことがバレエ音楽作曲家の評価の低さの原因の一つと思われるが、作曲家本人のせいではない。オリジナルにこだわり初演時の姿を再現したボニングの労作は、通常版より第1幕、第2幕とも15分ほど長く約60分。ところどころ聴きなれないフレーズが顔を出す。通常版に慣れているとやや冗長に感じられ、カットもやむなしと思えなくもないが、初演時の姿を知るうえで貴重なことに変わりはない。モンテカルロの劇場オケは、再録のコヴェントガーデン盤と比べるとオケの技量はやや劣るかもしれないが、さすがに舞台の呼吸をよく知っており、雰囲気があって上手い。
