"Moonraker" tends to split the Bond fans, as it's more out and out cartoony than any Bond film before. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's here that Bond films really get split into "serious" and "silly".
Actually, "Moonraker" is tremendous fun. Quite what was going through Cubby Broccoli's mind when he decided to compete with "Star Wars" is anyone's guess, but the pulpy sci fi adventure suits Moore's Bond perfectly. In addition, the inclusion of the as yet unlaunched Space Shuttle gave the whole thing a nice sense of immediacy.
French actor Michel Lonsdale plays another barking mad entrepreneur in Hugo Drax, a spaceborne nutter with big plans for the human race. And back by popular demand is Richard Kiel's Jaws, whose tussle with Bond atop a cable car in Brazil leads to the unexpected development of getting his own love interest.
Q's gadgets were to the fore again, particularly a high-powered superfast gondola in which Bond initiates a thrilling high speed chase through the canals of Venice. Q also provides a boat/hang glider for Bond's trip down the Amazon, not to mention the lethal laser weapons carried by the troops during the climactic space battle.
Lois Chiles is the Bond girl this time; as Dr Goodhead (smirk!), she's a NASA scientist who's also a top CIA agent. How she has the time for that and arranging her hair is anyone's guess.
It all goes a bit mad at the end, with a full-on space battle, but "Moonraker" is a fun bit of fluff under the Bond banner.
