清朝における海賊対策を描きながら、最盛期から嘉慶帝以降の清朝（とそこから足を延ばして日中戦争期にも触れる）を描き出そうとする意欲作。著者の好みもあってか、視点はおもに海賊たちよりは、それを取り締まる官憲の活動に軸足を置いている。この取り締まり側の対策・具体的な被害・海賊構成員の出自やその後を豊富な資料を使いながら説明するスタイルなので、人は選ぶかもしれないが、このジャンルは他に似た本も少ないので避けては通れないだろう。
