John Woo's gangster story is a first in many ways, this would be the first of many films he would make with leading man Chow Yun Fat, it was also the film that started the genre known as Heroic Bloodshed. A style of film that combined ballistic action with deep routed character and emotion, a genre where heroes aren't all good guys and nothing is black and white.
Centring round the story of two very different brothers, Ho is a successful gangster while his younger brother, Kit, is a rookie cop. After Ho is released from prison, after serving time for counterfeiting, he decides to try and go straight, both for his own sake and for his brother who is coming under increasing pressure due to his underworld links. Though trying to give up his life of crime proves hard for Ho when an old friend, Mark, asks for his help on one last job. The situations begins to go drastically wrong and after several shoot-outs and double crosses Ho and Kit find themselves fighting for their lives and of their honour.
