The 19 Rhapsodies are rarely heard in their entirety, possibly because of the prodigious technique required, but Misha Dichter believes we gain a much deeper understanding of Liszt’s keyboard genius if we move beyond the familiar barn-storming Second to the last four rhapsodies, composed in the 1880s, with their far-reaching harmonic implications. Thirty years elapsed between publication of the first 15 rhapsodies and composition of the last four, years in which Liszt went from being the virtuoso toast of Europe to the visionary Abbe Liszt worshipped by Wagner.
