This is Elena Barshai’s second recording of Bach for Brilliant Classics. Her first was of the concertos by Vivaldi that Bach transcribed for solo and multiple keyboards, made on a Metzler organ in the church of St Clara in Basle. For this unique recording of the Goldberg Variations she has chosen another Metzler instrument, at the church of St Peter and Paul in Villmergen. Metzler’s instruments as recorded by Lionel Rogg established their reputation as some of the finest of all modern instruments for Bach - and the finest Swiss organ-builders. Decades on from Rogg’s superlative recordings, Barshai’s own lively fingerwork and stylish registrations once more show them to best advantage.
